                                   A Message from Pastor Laine

"So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

These words come from the Gospel of John.  John reports that Jesus shared these words with his disciples. "What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.  Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.'  The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes.
We too, are the disciples of Jesus and we should take thee words to heart.  What do these words mean and how do we apply them?  I can't remember who said it, but I recall reading it.  "It i not the words of scripture that I don't understand that cause me pause; it is the wor that I do understand that pause me cause."
We can take these words of Jesus to apply to our communal lives.  Personally, we can struggle with our basic human instincts of self-centeredness, our wants and desires, judgments and opinions.  We can look to make these the flesh that we are born with.  Jesus is saying, however, that the spirit of God comes like the wind and that spirit wind can change us.  We don't have to view the world through the eyes of God - that spirit wind that changes us.  When we are guided by the wind spirit, we can empathize and understand and love others without judgment and opinions.  The wind spirit of God can strengthen our relationships and make them stronger and more loving.  That is what it means to be born of the spirit - an unconditional love of others void of judgment and critical opinion.
As a gathered community of Christ followers, we, too, struggle with self-centeredness, seeking out others who believe what we believe and act as we act - a self-fulfilling prophesy  However, the wind spirit comes to our community and insists that we see the community of believers as God sees us.  We are a group of sinners, not saints, who fall short of reaching the highest ideals of Christian community and insists that we can accept differences, diversity and be open to the possibilities of loving others who are uniquely the creation of God.
My prayer for you personally and for this community of believers is that we be guided by the wind spirit of God - that spirit that views all people as sacred in the sight of God, that spirit that seeks to understand and love the uniqueness of our differences and our diversity.

May the blessings and peace of God abide with you!
Pastor Laine
