    Sharing Faith Through Art
Picture
by Pat Shoup
“What can a church do to help their budget?” That question has been asked by members of many local churches including,  Trinity Lutheran Church in Bangor.
Trinity has been able to cut expenses this past year by printing their bulletin covers instead of purchasing them. With a new color copier, the members of the Worship and Music Committee decided that printing the covers would be easy. Even if it saved them a couple hundred dollars a year, it was a start.
While the committee was trying to decide on a picture for the front cover, it was suggested that they could have the Sunday School Children draw them. That idea grew into: “Why not let anyone make one – not only Sunday School Children?”
Since Advent season was coming up – it was a good time to start because there would be many things to draw (i.e. Baby Jesus, Candles, Christmas wreaths, Christmas trees, manger scenes, angels, etc.) Trinity Pastor Larry Laine explained to the congregation what was going to happen and the process began.
Not only does Trinity save money, but also the people who come to worship look forward to seeing the artwork on the front of each bulletin. Some Sundays there are two or three different bulletin covers with the same theme. The back of every bulletin contains a story about the front-page drawing and lets everyone know who drew the picture.
There have been covers made by children and adults of all ages. One of the Christmas covers was drawn by two-year-old Cori Conrad. It was a brown stick with some green limbs and colored circles for decorations, a beautiful Christmas Tree shared with everyone from the hands of a toddler.  One Sunday,  Brenda Herring shared a collage of the bulletin covers she had collected since the process began. It was a great reminder of how people are sharing their faith in pictures.
Jean Tucker, a member of Trinity and who is a resident at Alexandria Manor,  keeps every cover in her room and shares each one with her friends at the Manor. And everyone who receives food from Trinity's pantry receives a bulletin with their order as a reminder of the many things that are happening in the church.
Not only has Trinity cut down on expenses by printing their own covers, the congregation continues to express their Christian faith by sharing their art.
Trinity Lutheran Church invites you to join them on any Sundays at 10:15. You'll not only get to see the bulletin yourself, but you'll also be able to spend an hour with a congregation which loves to share their faith with their guests. And after the service, you're invited to get to know the members better during the coffee hour downstairs in the Fellowship Hall.

                                   A Message from Pastor Laine

                                   A Prescription for Church Growth"

We are here to share our faith, to reach out to all people, to engage anyone and everyone.  We are ere to grow in faith, love and hope for all humanity.  As a local congregation our goal is o provide a community of faith that is positive, uplifting and affirming to all members and guests of our community.  We are here to support one another, to invite one another and to share our faith with each other.  We do these things by:

1.  Engaging others as guests, not visitors - people and persons that we want to know and invite to be part of our community of faith.  As a guest they are important, significat and to be treated with the upmost care and consideration - not unlike what we do for each and every member of this community.  When guests arrive we greet them with humility and openness, engaging them with conversation and introduction to others in our community with similar life experiences, education or vocational interests.  We provide a space for them to be present and be a vital part of our community, to share and participate in those things that are meaningful and important to them.  This takes an attitude of outreach and the abandonment of self-interest - others are more important than we are.  We live for others!

2.  Recommending our community to others by: a) sharing a bulletin that has a message and a story about the person who drew the bulletin.  It is an easy way to begin that process of conversation that is so necessary in establishing a relationship with others. b) Dropping in a conversation some information or significant event or something quite simple such as "you should see the kids march around the sanctuary during the closing hymn!"  c) Talking about a meaningful exchange you had with someone at church about their life that was meaningful to you and helped shape you in some way.  d) Invite someone to church, a friend and an acquaintance, a relative who is searching for some answer or seeking a community for involvement or entertainment.

3.  Sharing your faith story.  Think about how you came about understanding God in your life.  What was it that brought you into a close relationship with God, with the church and with this particular community of believers?  It is not often that we share this experience so most of us simply don't know how to talk about it.  Write it out on a piece of paper, copy someone else's answer that fits you, find a poem or a phrase that is meaningful to you that expresses your thoughts about a relationship with God.  Write it out and memorize it.  Share it with your spouse or a friend.  Learn to talk about your faith story with others.  It is the most powerful witness that you can share with someone.  Tell how it has changed your life in some way that is meaningful to you and the people around you.

           Peace an blessings- Pastor Laine
