                     A Message from Pastor Laine

Martin Luther - 500 years later
The year was 1517 - 500 years ago.  The story goes that a priest by the name of Martin Luther posted on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany a document.  The document was an invitation for dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church.  There were 95 things that Luther wanted to talk about relative to the teachings and religious practices of the Roman Catholic Church.  Luther's invitation for dialogue was met with a bit or resistance - actually, a lot of resistance.  Shortly thereafter, within 3 or 4 years, he was excommunicated from the church and declared to be an outlaw of the empire - subject to bounty hunters, imprisonment and death.
The primary issue that Luther raised was the issue of indulgences.  The Roman Catholic Church had been selling indulgences for years, even decades.  To build the cathedral , in the Vatican, which costs millions of dollars (in today's money).  Pope Leo X endorsed selling indulgences to finance the construction.  An indulgence was something that most common folks believed was a necessity.  The teaching and preaching of the church reinforced this thought.  For example, if you had committed a sin, you could receive forgiveness of that sin if you paid for it.  If you wanted to make sure that you or a relative of yours would not spend time in purgatory you could buy a relic of the church, such as a splinter of wood that was from the original cross of Jesus.  (Jesus must have had a cross that could only have been built with all the wood at Cramer's Lumber Company in Wind Gap.)  There were a lot of splinters of wood sold, candles, pottery, stones - all of which were from the time of Jesus supposedly.  Obviously, it was a very corrupt church and very self-serving.
Luther did not believe that you had to buy your forgiveness of sins.  Luther rejected that nonsense and with careful study and argumentation he was convinced that we are saved by the grace of God through faith, not through works or through buying our salvation.  That was a very radical idea to the church in Rome.
The point of all of this is that Luther began a movement of reform within the Roman Catholic Church, which is continuing to this day.  The Roman Catholic Church still has issues - women clergy, clerical marriage, financial authority, the role of the priest and thee means of grace.
At the end of October and through the coming year we will celebrate that Reformation.  October 29, 2017 is the official date of the 500th year of celebration.  I think Martin Luther will be here that Sunday with us to explain his position on many issues relative to the church ad its teaching.  He may even be preaching.

Peace and Blessings,
Pastor Laine
